Serpentine Gallery + Choosing end paper (FMP)

I attended Serpentine gallery on this day to take a look at Emma Kunz’s Visionary Drawings. I wanted to take a look at the different patterns she was able to create with different materials and gain inspiration for my moving image. On my trip I found that her drawings were geometrical and a lot of them were done on graph paper. I also found the work of Christadoulos Pandyiotou within the exhibition. I was fascinated by the use of colour and geometric shapes that were being used. They almost put you in a trance and had you staring at them with deep concentration. Whilst I was there, I saw a young woman sitting across from a drawing and actually meditating to it. She was rocking bak and forth, deeply breathing and gently stretching. It was interesting to see how these drawings calmed her down and had her in a trance like meditation. From seeing this, I understood what I wanted my moving image to represent much better. I want it to create a feeling of calmness and peace. When people look at it, I want them to almost get lost in it and be taken to a world of their own. It was also interesting to see that although there was no music playing, this woman was able to meditate. This showed me that when meditating, some people don’t need any music. For my moving image, I was contemplating whether I should include my own music, however after seeing this, it has assured me that music is a good factor to include but not completely necessary.

The research done here was successful because I could see a similarity in the colours used for these drawings and the survey responses that I recieved. She had used a lot of pastel colours which is what I will be using. It was also interesting to see the arrangement of drawings around the gallery. For example, the brighter and bolder colours were either placed in the centre of the other pieces of work or they were were placed alone. The work was very trancing and some pieces included endless detail whereas others were quite simple. This helped me with my research because it gave me the idea to not make all my work too detailed but include some images that are detailed and some that are very simple to create that contrast.

Choosing end paper:

I decided to choose a simple burgundy colour for my end paper because I felt like there was already so much going on within the book. It was filled with detail, from the text, to illustrations. Therefore I felt that having end paper that was also filled with intense detail would get lost in the book. By choosing simple end paper, its almost like creating a breathe before the page is turned and the information from the first page is all absorbed. I think if given the second chance, I would create a small and simple design for my end paper. This is so it fits the theme more. However, I don’t have an issue with the end paper being as simple as one colour.
