moving image (FMP)

To put my images together to create a small animation/ moving image I used stop motion. I transferred all the pictures from my laptop onto the app and put them in order that I wanted. This method was quite quick and easy. I think that the most difficult part was creating the images for the moving image. Overall, I did think that the images were not identical to the storyboard. This is because I didn’t give myself enough time to add the detail I would’ve wanted. Time management for my moving image wasn’t very good as I found myself pushing the moving image to the back which led me to rush it at the end. I would have wanted it to be more explosive in terms of the colour and movement. I had the idea of it being so busy and filled with detail. However although my work wasn’t too busy I found that this actually didn’t look too bad.

I think if I added too much detail it might not have been as effective and people wouldn’t concentrate on one thing but wouldn’t know where to look. With my moving image, because the main focus in the centre of the picture that is where the person looking at the moving image is looking. This is quite similar to visual meditation so again I was able to refer back to some of my research and include what I learnt from my visual research.I would want this moving image to be played in the dark so that the different colours are highlighted. Perhaps coming through a projector onto a clear wall. This way the colours would be highlighted and all the shapes would be emphasised.

I was quite surprised to find that I really enjoyed the process of making a moving image over making a book. I thought because I already had some skills when it came to making a book, that I would enjoy it much more and that making the moving image would be dreadful because I hadn’t really made one this long before. However it was the complete opposite. I found myself wanting more time to create my moving image and always coming back to it to make changes. I liked challenging myself to use the software stop motion and pushing myself to create unusual shapes and be very abstract and free with what I was doing. Using Illustrator and stop motion also helped with my patience. I learnt that slowly I would get the hang of things but also that creating a moving image takes time because you have to get each picture in frame by frame as its changing. Although I came across some problems I thought it they were easily repairable.

What I essentially wanted the moving image to be was a source of meditation. I wanted people to feel calmer when they looked at and for it to take them to another place. The aim was to include different colours and shapes that had been mentioned in the survey as well as my own interpretation of what meditation feels like to me.

When choosing the music for this piece I wanted to make sure that it was calm and had balance so it wasn’t a boring piece of music. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to create my own music which I would have used a keyboard to create, instead I used the research I had previously done and playlists that I had looked at to find the right sound to match. At first I thought about using a single sound and having it repeated but when I tried it, it didn’t work well with the moving image. Instead I looked at different theme songs on the app Stop Motion however I felt that it was too upbeat as well. I finally chose the song Reaching Nirvana from the 50 best meditation songs collection album. I felt like this song calmed my stress levels and the sound fit perfectly with the shapes and colours.
