Creating dust cover (FMP)

Screen Shot 2019-05-19 at 22.38.17.pngUsing illustrator, I created my dust cover. At once I knew the change that I wanted to make was the blurb. I think the font that I used was too big but also it doesn’t include enough information about the book. Because the book is formal, it doesn’t make sense for the book cover to be informal. However I do like the colour scheme of the front cover. I chose this nude look because the book cloth that I chose was also a similar colour to this. Ultimately I decided to choose a nude colour for the book cover because I think its quite relaxing to look at and because within the book theres a lot of different pastel colours, I thought that having a colour thats not too bold will make the other colours in the book stand out more. I chose the font Minion Variable concept because I like how bold it looks in comparison to the inside of the book.

The book cover is quite abstract and this is because inside everything is in order, giving you new ways to relax and is quite educational and informative. I wanted to make the cover abstract to create that clear balance between educational and fun. Also the swirl patterns that were created were also created for a purpose. I like how the swirls almost collide into one another and look a bit out of control. I want people to get lost in the swirls. From going to the Serpentine Gallery, I mentioned that sometimes less detail is more appreciated and can be enough. In this case, I think the book cover looks best with a simple design rather than having a lot going on.

Here are a few book covers that that I looked at before I started creating my dust cover. The first book caught my eye because of the colours used. I liked the contrast between the creamy colour as the background and the blue font colour. I also liked how there was small writing at the bottom of the book. I also liked how the image on the colour is realistic. I was going to take a picture and place it onto the book cover but I think I didn’t want there to be two different styles on the front of the book. Therefore I chose to illustrate everything on Illustrator.

The second book was chosen because I like the simplicity of the design on the cover. Although its not much, its still quite captivating and pleasing to look at. From this cover, I chose to make my book cover quite simple but I decided to make it more abstract and not look like an illustration of scenery.

The third book was looked at because of the complex colours and detail. When I compared this and the second book, it was clear that I wanted my cover to be simple. I also like the way the font is set out.
