Visual Communication

For this task we had to portray different emotions through the letter D using materials we found all around Ravensbourne. To find the different cloths and pieces of cardboard and wood, I went to the dumpster behind Ravensbourne and collected the resources. I found this task helpful in terms of helping me to be more experimental and come up with ideas quicker. One of the letter D’s also had to be 3D which is the first image I have taken below. overall I was pleased with two of the three letters I produced. The third one which was made out of wood was quite rushed because I ran out of time and just drew all over the wood with different colours to create a chaotic atmosphere. If I had more time, I would’ve used a different adhesive to stick the cardboard and the wood together. I learnt a variety of skills, including working at a faster pace, not being afraid to experiment with materials and also how every material you have can contribute to your final outcome. This is the first letter I worked on, I decided to start creating the 3D letter first as it was the most important. I used card and black cloth. Once I had created the shape of the letter using the cardboard, I used a black ink pen and scribbled all over the cardboard. To create a better effect and to add texture, I wrapped black cloth around the letter. The letter was meant to portray the emotion of Fear. This letter presents the feeling of anxiety. I teared up a scrap piece of paper and used  a glue stick to layer the pieces on top of one another to create chaos and to build up the surface. To create the cuts on the side of the D, I used a Stanely Knife. I wanted to create a rough surface in contrast to the smooth paper.
