The Lift (film)

When watching the film ‘The Lift’, I was able to see the different ways to represent the word ‘descent’. It was interesting to see how the camera man was able to transform such a boring concept into something interesting. You can see the different characters that make each part of the film interesting. The main focus was in the elevator where a series of questions were posed to strangers. Real conversations were filmed which made the film so raw and also contained genuine conversation between friends and strangers. Because of this he was able to capture the different personalities while the Lift was constantly moving.

I could see that he wanted to gather as much information as he could from the strangers, based on topics such as religion, their own lives and mental health. The colours were full and uninteresting so you were completely focused on the conversation and people that entered the Lift. At first I felt uncomfortable not knowing much about any of the characters but towards the end I felt more comfortable, as if they were friends. They became vulnerable and comfortable enough to open up about both the good and bad in their lives. I liked the idea of Filipino in a container space, hoe he made the viewer feel like it was just then and the stranger in the Lift, really connecting you to his art. He also chose a location with character so we could all relate to at least one person.
